Dr. Al Gwinn reminded the Administrative Council of a past meeting, at
which time, he explained the practice of L to the 3rd power:
Loving, learning and leading effectively. Dr. Gwinn referred to the letter
of James (the brother of Jesus), 3rd chapter and the 16th
verse as it speaks to the leaders of the church to be pure, peace-loving,
considerate and open to reason; it is straightforward and sincere – they
are peacemakers. Then reading from the 4th chapter, 7th
verse: Submit yourselves to God. |

Dr. Al Gwinn asked the Administrative Council if anyone knew how glass
elevators on the side of buildings came to be? As the story goes: An
architect from Atlanta, Georgia was trying to create a design to add
another elevator for a building in downtown Atlanta. The architect and a
group of associates were standing in the lobby of the building. A
custodian standing near the group happened to hear the group talking and
thought to himself, building an additional elevator in the building would
just create such a construction mess that he would have to clean up. The
custodian stepped up to the group and pulled aside a VP he felt
comfortable talking to and suggested they should build the elevator
outside of the building. Thus the idea was born and now you see glass
elevators on building exteriors.
At this time in the meeting Dr. Gwinn introduced a film clip from the
Night Line program with Ted Coppell entitled, The Deep Dive For
Innovation. The film clip highlighted a design firm given the challenge to
take something old and familiar, a shopping-cart, to completely redesign
it in five days. A team of individuals from different areas of skill and
knowledge was assembled. The team divided into groups to talk, define,
watch, and learn with a couple of guidelines: One idea at a time and stay
focused. A few additional thoughts and ideas came out of the clip that the
Council discussed:
| 1 |
Fail often in order to succeed sooner. |
| 2 |
After many hours continue to keep an open mind
and a
belief that chaos will happen. |
| 3 |
Being playful is important to being innovative. |
When the film clip ended Dr. Gwinn admonished the Administrative
Council to sacrifice for the church and just think with the Lord. To creep
out of the box a little bit when thinking about the Andover property and
our downtown facility. |

Andover Property Update:
·1 Foster Ockerman, Jr. shared he had received a draft copy of
the deed to Andover property which now is being revised to reflect several
items particular to Fayette County. The Kentucky Conference and the
Lexington District are continuing to work out the arrangement details. The
only change, to date, is the 5-year payment plan has been increased to 7
years. Foster and Ernie Stamper have talked with lending institutions and
getting proposals, including one which has an alternate with a sub-prime
interest rate for a short-term loan. A loan may be finalized within the
next 30 days.
Annual Conference reports:
·2 The three Lay Members to Annual Conference: Dr. Jim Orr,
Marsha Berry, and George Denmark shared in their reports regarding Annual
Conference. Congratulations were extended to Dr. Al Gwinn for his
unanimous appointment by the Conference as its candidate for the
episcopacy for the 2004 elections.
o Dr. Jim Orr shared he was very thankful for the
opportunity to attend Annual Conference. Dr. Orr said we have a very
special Bishop and Dr. Orr found Bishop King to be spirit-filled and
easy to talk to.
o Dr. Al Gwinn was reappointed to 1st UMC. Dr.
Gwinn also was elected to head the delegation to General Conference with
Maxie Dunnam, Thomas Eblen, Deborah Wallace-Padgett, Rhoda Peters,
Thomas Grieb, and Edger Goins. Lay delegates are John Minton, Mel Bowdan,
Christine Harman, Larry Epley, Jeannette Westerfield, Verna McKinney
and Richard Wilson
o Clergy delegates to the Southeastern Jurisdictional
conference are David Grout and others. Lay delegates are Craig
Robertson, Connie Mitchell and others.
o Marsha Berry reported about a funny moment at Annual
Conference regarding a standing rule that turned out not to be a
standing rule, at all, but a tradition.
o Marsha said, in reflection, the face of Annual Conference
has changed over the years as the mode of casual dress has changed.
o Marsha also shared that there were equal number of deaths,
retirees, and new members taken into full connection.
o George Denmark reported this was his fifth Annual
Conference to attend and found it to be the best of all. In the language
of a retired Navy man, if Bishop King were an admiral he would love to
serve under him.
o George said, in his opinion, Dr. Gwinn was the MVP, and
Evelyn Laycock was a great speaker.
Finance Committee:
· Ernie Stamper, chair reported he was a little disappointed
the pledges are not closer to the actual budget amount. The positive side
is when looking at a 6-year overview the year-to-date total in May is the
best in 6 years. The actual income is still low and actual expense is
still well below normal. There being no questions the report was approved
as reported.
Endowment Foundation:
· Bob Fleming, chair reported a $50,000 gift had been received
from the Francis Lancaster Estate. Bob also shared with the Administrative
Council the Endowment Foundation is planning an endowment event for the
fall using the theme: All Members Can Be Stewards For Endowment. Foster
mentioned that Rev. Lazar recently called to say he and his second wife
were coming to Kentucky for a visit and a working lunch was arranged at
the Church. At the end of the meeting a decision was made for the Church
enter into a second stage with a gifting agreement to be prepared as
requested by Rev. Lazar for his consideration. This agreement would
expound the original proposal of developing a Christian retreat center
with cabins, lodge, and camping grounds.
United Methodist Women:
· Jackie Bondurant, chair reported there was a UMW meeting the
1st of June. There will be an UMW Ice Cream Social here at the
Church on July 13, from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.
· Looking ahead the Kentucky Conference UMW will host the UMW
Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference in Louisville. As a project each
church was asked to buy cornhusk dolls. There will 2500 dolls at $5.00
each. The Lexington District UMW hopes to do 210 dolls.
Youth Pastor Search:
·1 Dr. Al Gwinn reported the search has narrowed to three
persons being interviewed and the committee centered on one candidate with
an offer being extended. However, the chosen individual also received an
offer from another church in Missouri in addition to the 1st
UMC offer. Dr. Gwinn said he hear something, one-way or the other, by
Wednesday, June 18 about the candidate’s decision.
