ADMINISTRATIVE COUNCIL MINUTES

JULY 9, 2001

 

I.        CONVENING THE BODY: Mary Wis Haggin: The July 9, 2001, Administrative Council meeting was opened with prayer by Associate Pastor Ken Klemme at 7:10 PM.

 

II.   APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Mary Wis Haggin: The May 21, 2001, Administrative Council minutes were approved with one correction: Item IV.B.1.a.: the Trustees did not specify that surplus proceeds were to benefit the Estonia trip.  The motion for designating the proceeds was in Item IV.B.1.c.

 

III. CENTERING TIME: Al Gwinn (Attachment I)

A.     Core value #1, “We are the Body of Christ”, using text from Romans 12, was discussed at the March 5 meeting.

  1. Core value #2: “The Scriptures Are God’s Word for Us”, text from II Timothy 3:16-17, was discussed at the May 21 meeting.
  2. Core value #3:  “Prayer is our Lifeline to God”, using text from Matthew 7:7, Luke 18:1, Matthew 21:13, and Jeremiah 29:13.

1.      Prayer builds on knowledge of the scriptures.

2.      Prayer helps us remember that things of God are of extreme value to us.

3.      Prayer helps us find God’s vision for us.

 

IV.  MINISTRY UPDATES

A.     Lay Member to Annual Conference: George Denmark

1.      Bishop King reminded the ministers to tell their congregations they are loved.

2.      The Bishop appears to be one who is not afraid to change.

3.      Both contemporary and traditional worship styles were observed at Conference.

4.      The Bishop asked the ministers to “put the bells back in the tower”.

B.     Daily Parking Change: Scooter Leonard (Attachment II) 

1.      Daily parking in the rear church lot is being discontinued, freeing up spaces for church activities.

2.      Monthly parking is not affected.

3.      The parking attendant will continue through the transition period.

C.     Faith Promise Request: David Bratcher: The Missions Commission requests to spend $3,750 for Young Life camp scholarships, $5,000 for the Hope Center, and $10,000 for the United Methodist Habitat for Humanity Build in September; approved.

D.     Igniting Ministries: Marsha Berry (Attachment III)

1.      Igniting Ministries is a United Methodist campaign beginning in September using media delivered messages to reach the unchurched, using the message: Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors.

2.      The Evangelism, Discipleship, and Communications areas are working with this ministry.

3.      The Council affirmed the Igniting Ministries mission.

E.      Finance Report: Scooter Leonard: (Attachment IV): Pledged income remains behind budget, but actual expenses are in line with actual income; report approved.

      F.   Other Reports

1.      Endowment Committee: Bob Fleming

a.       Education, Distributions, and Investment Committees have been formed.

b.      A “Season of Emphasis” is tentatively planned to begin on September 9.

2.      New District Superintendent Welcoming Service: Foster Ockerman, Jr.

a.       First Church has been asked to host the welcoming service for new District Superintendent Tom Eblen in September.

b.      A motion was made and approved to host the welcoming service.

3.      Vision Team: Richard Dorton: A letter will be going out this week to each church member from the Vision Team in order to form a profile of the people of First Church.

4.      Associate Pastor Report: Ken Klemme

a.       Since coming to First Church, Ken has seen 12 new members join.

b.      Ken sees his mission as serving God, sharing in the Pastor’s vision, and serving the congregation.

 

V.     WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW OR WOULD LIKE TO KNOW:  Billy Ray Jennings is tentatively scheduled to join the First Church staff in October.

 

VI. CLOSING PRAYER: Al Gwinn: The closing prayer was offered at 8:55 PM.
